The Fishermen’s Trail is considered one of the most beautiful coastal trails in the world. So I figured, I’ll take it to the test. So in less than 24 hours, I am on my way to Portugal, ready to cover the famous coastal hike – officially 226.5 km, divided into 13 segment, I made some minor adjustments to make it fit my time frame. The trail goes all the way down the Portuguese Atlantic coast. Well, not all the way. But lots of the way. And lots of sand. Which makes it very challenging. Der Fischerpfad verläuft wortwörtlich im Sande, as the Germans say. I went jogging on sand, I know what I’m talking about. And I have been to the Atlantic coast so I also know that the permanent exposure to the strong and salty winds add to the challenge. But, if you believe any travel blog out there, the beauty of the landscape more than makes up for the crude elements. What makes it almost comfy is that there are plenty of accommodations along route and you’re hardly ever really off civilization. For first-time solo hikers quite comforting. Initially, I planned on taking my dog Max with me, but I doubt his weak joints (he spent his first couple of years chained outside without any chance to build up stamina or muscles, f*ck animal abusers) can handle the uneven ground and as much as I love him, he is slow and lazy, and I have enough luggage to carry around without an additional 15-kg-fur baby on my arm. So holiday with grandma Liebermann it is for him and writing this with his boopable nose and his big, sad eyes lovingly gazing up to me, I already miss him.
Usually, I start blogging about my holidays and outdoor adventures after I get back and then forget to finish through. So, always trying to be better, I have pre-written at least all the research bits while preparing and I set myself the ambitious goal to update and publish on the go. And probably re-write everything because that’s how I am. Of course, there are already plenty of blogs describing the trail and personal recommendations. The most important website for this adventure is and has been https://rotavicentina.com/en where you get plenty of data and detailed descriptions of every section. In my daily hiking sections, I have quoted and copied their info quite often. My puns and personality will be added later, when I have lived it – and hopefully, my story will add to the vast collection of outdoor geek posts and inspire and help someone else in the future, who will be stepping in my footpaths, even though they will long have been washed away by the tide… and with these cheesy words I bid you goodbye, and goodnight – until Portugal!!
